Billed as the WWE’s first third-generation superstar, The Rock entered the electrifying world of sports entertainment in 1996, under the name Rocky Maivia, which paid homage to both his father and grandfather’s ring names. Coined “The Blue Chipper” by Jim Ross, Rocky Maivia quickly made an impact in the ring, winning the WWF Intercontinental Championship in 1997. His time as a face was short lived, due to audience chants of ‘Die, Rocky, Die’ filling up arenas. After returning from a knee injury, Rocky would join Farooq’s Nation of Domination stable and turn heel, kicking off the third-person talking, insult spewing persona that would become The Rock.
